Urinary tract infections (UTI) or bladder infections are an infection inside the bladder. These typically cause painful urination, frequent trips to the bathroom, and small amounts of urine when emptying the bladder.
UTIs can be caused by many factors including not urinating after sex, holding your bladder for long periods, not drinking enough water, and sometimes they just happen!
UTIs can be very painful and that is typically the reason people seek care.
Complications of Untreated UTIs
If left untreated, a UTI can become complex and lead to an infection in the kidneys.
Treatment
UTIs are treated with an antibiotic. It’s important to take the entire course of antibiotics, even if you start to feel better, to be sure the entire infection is treated.
Your provider may also give you medication to help with the pain of a UTI. This medication can make your urine turn different colors like bright orange or blue.
Frequent UTIs
If you have frequent bladder infections, it may be that the wrong antibiotic is being used. We will likely send your urine to the lab for several days to see which antibiotic is best. If that’s the case, your provider will call you to change the antibiotic if needed.
UTIs are not sexually transmitted infections and you cannot pass them to your partner.
