Ureaplasma
Ureaplasma is another bacteria that can be sexually transmitted, although it is quite rare. Only 1 to 3% of the population is typically infected with ureaplasma. It is also a kind of bacteria that may be present in the body as a normal part of the body's bacteria.
This test is typically run with the mycoplasma testing.
Symptoms
The symptoms are similar to mycoplasma, meaning the primary symptom is urethritis — burning and tingling at the urethra.
When Should You Be Tested?
If you are having symptoms, we first recommend testing for routine STIs because those are more commonly the cause of symptoms. If all of your testing is negative and you are still having pain, burning, and tingling at the urethra, we recommend testing for ureaplasma.
Unfortunately, this is a test now being ordered and run on patients without symptoms and without an explanation about this type of bacteria, which leads to quite a bit of confusion for patients.
Treatment
Ureaplasma is treated with antibiotics twice a day for a week.
