Mammograms: When to Start and Why Breast Cancer Screening Matters

Learn what a mammogram is, when breast cancer screening should begin, and why early detection is critical for saving lives.

A mammogram is imaging used for screening for breast cancer. The imaging looks at both lumps that are palpable to the provider and lumps that may not be felt yet.

The breast tissue is placed between flat plates of the imaging machine and compressed to get the best picture of the internal breast tissue.

When to Start Mammogram Screening

Mammography screening is recommended beginning at age 40. The risk of breast cancer increases exponentially at age 40. For people aged 39 and younger, the incidence of breast cancer is 1 in 210. At age 40–59, it is 1 in 26. This is why screening is recommended starting at age 40.

By age 45, it is strongly recommended to begin annual mammograms if you have not yet.

Why Mammograms Matter

Screening mammograms lead to early detection of breast cancer, early treatment, and saves lives.
