HIV
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a sexually transmitted virus in the bloodstream. This is almost always asymptomatic for the first 2 to 4 weeks. It is typically found in routine testing before symptoms begin.
Symptoms
Symptoms of HIV include flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, chills, rash, sore throat, and fatigue.
Treatment
There is no cure for HIV. There are very effective treatments to help manage the amount of HIV in the bloodstream. It is incredibly important to start HIV care as soon as you are diagnosed.
AIDS is the final stage of the disease and can almost always be avoided with proper medication management.
Prevention
For prevention of the spread of HIV, condoms are the first line of protection. Taking your medication as prescribed to keep the amount of virus in the bloodstream low also lowers the risk of transmission. If you have a partner who is known to have HIV, you can use PrEP to lower your risk of contracting HIV.
